Create for the Sake of Creating.

I love nothing better than to create in my scrapping space. This last week, I was able to be alone in my house, and scrap for the sake of scrapping. I did something I wanted to do, not for an assignment, not for anyone--- just for me. It was one of the best days I have had in a long time. I was able to create for the sake of creating. I was able to play with all the new things I had recently added to my supply collection. It was so fun to mix papers, letter stickers and embellishments. It was bright, cheery and fun. It made me smile and feel so happy inside. I just let myself go, feel in the moment and create.

I am sure I could say that some of the feelings were due to the wonderfully warm weather we are starting to have here. Weather were we can go out without a jacket on, and create chalk drawings on the driveway. this must be one of the true joys of life----drawing with chalk on a driveway or a sidewalk. I love to sit down in the sun with my kids and draw on demand. It inspires the love of life, the living of your life, taking a moment and spending it on something that brings you pure joy.

Perhaps it is the beautiful flowers blooming all along my front walk. I adore pink tulips. I have them planted all over the front yard---which my scrap space window overlooks. The beautiful blooms of spring, are a sight for sore winter eyes. Something that allows a sunny spot to shine in my soul and inspire me to do something to keep that feeling going.

It could have even been that I had a nice quiet house, a sleeping baby puppy nearby, and a great comedy in the DVD player. Sometimes, there is nothing better than a good Austin Powers movie playing in the background---something seen so many times you can listen to it without seeing the actual picture and know exactly what is going on. and it still makes you laugh after that bazillionth time.

Whatever, the reason, it was a little slice of heaven on earth. If you have had not one of these experiences with your scrapbooking lately, you need to make a date with yourself for an artist moment. Instead of a Spa Day, set up your creative date. well, maybe not in place of a spa day, after all, a good massage can also be pretty awesome for the soul, right? okay, so don't skip the massage, just make sure to make the creative time for very soon there after. and surround yourself with beautiful flowers---even if you go to buy them for yourself. Put on a favorite movie, or cd. Pour yourself a cup of whatever makes your mouth happy. and create for the sake of creating.

April theme: Stripes and Polka Dots

This is what I wrote for the Creating Garden homepage about this theme:

Stripes & Polka Dots
They never go out of style. They just change with each new season, each new wave of trends---the stripes get wider, smaller, and the polka dots get bigger, smaller, random, more uniform---it doesn't matter, they are always in style. And they go together like Peanut Butter & Jelly.

It totally makes me smile now just reading it again. Where did that come from? I had forgotten to write it, and Jeff caught me in a moment where I was running to the next thing, and forced me to sit down and get it done. I must have been hungry at the time.

But it is true---stripes and polka dots do go together like peanut butter and jelly. They are perfect for one another. and they are everywhere. not always together. usually by themselves. One way or another, they are a perfect design in and of themselves. You can take a polka dot and make it fit with any style---it can be random, painted, etched, stamped, drawn, orderly, big, small, overlapping, etc. The same for the stripes. Think seersucker suits and farmer overalls. Both a thin blue stripe, yet, so different at the same time.

It was fun, as usual, to see what the Garden Girls did with this theme. (I always say that don't I?) I do enjoy watching the cool things they create with their wonderfully talented mind. After I looked at this months themed garden, I wanted to lock myself up in my scrap space and create for a whole week. The ideas these girls come up with! In case you didn't get enough, here are some more!

Weekly Challenge by Lisa McGarvey
Usually when most of us do a layout, its of pictures from one sitting. A birthday, pictures from a day at the beach or just a few great shots that were taken during one sitting. I think as scrapbookers we're taught that its easier to scrap by grouping event pictures together. My challenge for you this week is to scrap pictures from differnet sittings.

Do you clean up every time you need to walk away, or leave it messy?

Because this is my office/studio/scrap space - I try to keep it as neat as possible. It doesn't always happen though. I always clean up before meeting a customer or a photo shoot. I'm pretty much stuffing things behind closed doors alot just so it looks neat!

If you drink and eat while you scrap in your space, what do you have?

There's always a coffee at my desk - can't live without it! So far no accidents with the java - I've been lucky!

What do you listen to, or watch on TV while you scrap?

I don't have a t.v. in my office, so I just listen to music, either the radio or itunes. I can't scrap without music.

How fast do you scrap?

I'm a painfully slow scrapper!! I can't sit down and just do a page. I tend to fiddle, push paper around, look at my photos, then go back to it the next day, and the next, and the next!!

What size do you do most of your stuff in?

I have always been an 8 1/2x11 scrapper.

My Space

The room is basically split up into 3 areas: office area, scrap space and studio. As you can see from the photos, I'm pretty much a minimalist. This is pretty much indicative of the rest of my house, except not so office like.

Pg 2 - This is my scrap area. I hide a lot of my supplies behind the black doors in clear plastic drawers. This is also where I have all of my scraps, paper and just odds and ends. It's basically where I hide my mess so it's not in view. Because I meet customers in my office, I try to keep it as neat as possible.

Pg 3 - The tray on the left side of my desk holds layouts I'm working on. They're usually on the floor and when I need to clean up, I stack my work and just place it on the tray. Even with two desks - I still end up scrapbooking on the floor!
The bucket holds recently purchased embelishments and misc items I haven't put away.
I keep my newest paper and stickers in the buckled magazine rack on my desk.
The accordian file folder and small black box on the right hold my photos.
The 4 silver trays hold my most used embelishments. Pg 1 shows the trays opened up.

Pg 4 - I have baskets from Ikea scattered everywhere that hold odds and ends. I haven't gotten around to labelling them yet. The drawer unit on the left hand side is a newer purchase and my favourite! It's an unfinished unit from Ikea - I'll eventually paint it and label the drawers when I have time. What I love is that the drawers pull right out and it holds a lot of supplies! I take the drawers out while I scrap all the time and riffle through all of my goodies.

Pg 5 - Here are some of the drawers pulled out from the Ikea unit.

Pg 6 - This photo shows my office area which is right across from my scrap area. This is where I proof my photos, meet with customers and keep up with my office work. A few more Ikea baskets hold supplies. I also have a small drawer unit underneath my desk that also holds embelishments.

Pg 7 - I'm able to keep this area neat by storing everything behind my backdrops, from props and stools to seamless paper and frames. You name it - it's back there!

Pg 8 - This used to be my husband's office, up until two years ago. Once his office moved offsite, I couldn't wait to take over. This space is just off of our main entrance. There was a sitting area where my backdrops now are with glass french doors. Because it became an eyesoar looking at my backdrops from the main entrance, we just recently had the glass on the french doors covered with mirror on both sides. I love it - it gives me privacy and also a full length mirror for my customers.
